Once you have pieces of writing or art that reflect your experiences in life, these mementos can inspire you to pursue work that may be completely different. This is something that I experienced significantly in this class (Writing 220). Our projects throughout the semester were based on an origin piece that we were supposed to "experiment" with. For me, this was an original song I wrote over a year ago about a breakup. After going through the most significant breakup 19-year old me had experienced, to put it no other way, I was crushed. And in the week following this unfortunate event, I happened to sit down at my keyboard, and wrote a song called “Unprepared”. It was very much in the heat of the moment, the words and melodies shaping themselves quickly. Still it remains one of the most real, personal songs I’ve written, and it brings me back to a time in my life when I was younger, and struggling. Having some experience with screenwriting, for my second experiment I decided to start writing a script following some of the themes covered in my song. However, after continuing to write my script, I found it quickly turned into something completely different from my origin piece. The screenplay is something I'm very proud of, and although it may have little to do with my own experiences, it is a product of self-expression, transformation, and my own creativity.

The Plot

Matt Owens is a college freshman who just got dumped, and he doesn’t know what to make of himself or his surroundings. His boisterous roommate Lucas is oblivious, and he decides to cope by isolating himself, writing in a journal. As he continues to write, his past comes back to haunt him, only making the situation more confusing in his mind. He isolates himself, but he can’t seem to find this solitude anywhere on campus, especially when he is pursued by a group of vengeful bullies that slowly reveal the unknown pieces of Matt’s past.
